Liturgical Ministers serve the worship needs of the parish in a variety of ways. They serve as lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, members of the choir or cantors, Mass coordinators, and ushers. Some decorate the church for liturgical feasts and seasons.
Usually a person chooses to participate in one ministry. After a brief orientation to the ministry, you will be placed on a schedule to begin serving Saint Mary Parish.
You may contact us or call the parish office (321-1207) and ask to leave a message for the coordinator of the specific ministry in which you are interested. Thank you for your interest in serving as a liturgical minister!
Below is a description of the liturgical ministries of lector and communion minister. Other ministries may be found on the Parish Groups page under Liturgical Ministries.
Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion serve the Body and Blood of the Lord to the assembly as they come forward in procession. When needed, they also bring communion to individuals at their pew. They reverently offer the host or the chalice to each person during the communion rite, and help with cleaning up after Mass. For the current communion minister schedule, click on Documents.
Lectors proclaim the word of God to the assembly by reading the first two Scripture readings at Sunday Mass. They give time to careful preparation of the text during the week. One of the lectors usually carries the Book of the Gospels in the entrance procession, and places it on the altar as Mass begins. The other lector usually announces the various petitions for which we pray in the General Intercessions.
